An adult female with a normal body weight requires approximately 2,000 to 2,400 kcal per day to maintain her weight, an adult male with a normal body weight 2,400 to 2,800 kcal. Obviously our energy requirements depend on the activities we engage in. A woman practising sport frequently will require more energy than a man who does not engage in sports. If our daily requirement is 2,500 kcal and we consume 3,500 kcal, 1000 kcal will be sent to our fat tissue as reserve energy. 1 kg of body fat is equal to 7,000 kcal. If we consume 3,500 kcal each day for a period of one week we will gain 1 kg of body fat. For most people, however, this process is much more subtle. If we consume 2,525 kcal instead of the necessary 2,500 kcal over a one year period, we will also gain 1 kg of body fat. A weight loss diet means taking in less energy than we consume.

Food-based cholesterol definitely affects the blood cholesterol level, particularly in the section of the population which is more sensitive with respect to cholesterol absorption. The problem is that we cannot establish beforehand who is affected. On average the blood cholesterol level will increase by 2 to 3 mg after an intake of 100 mg of food-based cholesterol, which ultimately is very little. Food-based cholesterol increases LDL cholesterol, but less than saturated fats. This implies that eggs are less harmful than butter, full fat cheeses and meat products.

Fast food is part of our Western food culture but its general nutritional value is very poor. These meals have high levels of energy and fat, but their vitamin and mineral content is very low.
What is the advantage of StarMeal meals over fast food?
To carry out this test we randomly selected four well-known meals from the range on offer at a prominent burger chain. We opted for a Big Mac, Chicken Gourmet and Royal Deluxe, in each case accompanied by French fries. This particular chain also provides healthy salad options, so we selected a Caesar Salad. The analysis figures for these meals are supplied by the manufacturers themselves, who developed an intelligent system to indicate the nutritional value of the dishes correctly. By way of comparison we calculated the average composition of ten StarMeal meals.
In order to respond to this question, a food consumption survey was carried out in 2004. The objective of this type of research is to examine the population’s eating and living habits. Obviously we need to work with samples as it would be impossible to question ten million Belgians. However, the sample must be representative for the entire population, i.e. this small group must reflect all population groups. The researchers selected 3,200 people, 1,850 of whom originated from the Flemish Region, 1,050 from the Walloon Region and 300 from the Brussels Capital Region.
Only 31.3 % of men and 43.8 % of women eat vegetables daily, whereas the guidelines state that we should eat at least one portion a day. In the 19 to 29 age category only 24.2 % consume a daily portion of vegetables. Not including vegetable soups and juices, the average Belgian eats 138 g of vegetables daily, less than half the required 300 g! Even though we eat slightly more vegetables in summer than in winter, 146 g as opposed 126 g, we do remain well below the norm. The results speak for themselves: no one reaches the recommended healthy nutrition level, i.e. 300 g of vegetables daily.
Let’s be honest, we don’t mind eating vegetables, but they take such a long time to prepare! Fortunately a solution is at hand: a single StarMeal meal meets the healthy food requirement. On average, StarMeal meals contain 200 to 300 g of vegetables, much more than the average Belgian’s daily consumption!
